VISION

Don Bosco NEST envisages a child and youth friendly society that protects rights of children and promotes the moral and spiritual development of young people especially of those at risk.

MISSION

Don Bosco NEST is committed to enliven the lives of the neglected and less privileged children and young people through various initiatives and developmental programmes with the intention of ensuring them a better future.

  • It educates the young in moral values and gospel values in order to make them to live in holiness and as honest citizens.
  • It empowers the young and makes them self-sustainable by training them in different trades and life coping skills.
  • It promotes and protects the rights of children, by mobilizing the public to fight against child labour and various crimes against children through awareness campaigns.
  • It pledges to take care of the street and working children in particular by providing them their basic needs and help them grow as good citizens.
  • It networks with Governmental, Nongovernmental organizations, civil bodies and community organizations in their efforts to improve the conditions of families and children.

HISTORY

Don Bosco Nilayam for Education and Social Transformation (Don Bosco NEST) is a non governmental, non profitable institution run by the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Salesian Province of Trichy. In 1999, the dynamic visionary Late Fr. Amala Joseph SDB, Director, Don Bosco Anbu Illam Coimbatore, who always wanted to help the under-privileged, gave shape to his dream and hence Don Bosco NEST was founded, where such children would not only be given shelter, but their dreams and aspirations would be nurtured so that they could go back to their family as well as community and help others come up in life and thus uplifting the whole community that they belong to. Don Bosco NEST is where working children belonging to the below-poverty-line strata of society, who live in environs that are not conducive to education, are provided technical schooling as well as a direction in shaping their careers. The dream became a reality with the wholehearted support of C & A through Terre Des Hommes – Germany India programme till 2015 and at present the Holly childhood agency is supporting the programme. 

From 1999 to 2002 Fr. Amala Joseph was the director in anbuillam and also taking care of Don Bosco Nest.  From 2002 to 2004 Fr. Santhana raj was the director of both anbuillam and Nest.  During these period the assistant directors namely Fr. Lourdu jeyaraj, Fr. Ricopar, Bro. Arokia dass and Fr. Xavier Michael were the assistant directors who stayed in Tiruppur to develop the work.  Up to 2003 the Don Bosco Nest was functioning in a rented building and in 2003 new centre at Nallur was inaugurated with basic infrastructure and facilities through the support of C&A through TDH Germany.  From 2003 to 2010 Fr. John Dharman, Fr. Christophar Jeyaraj and Fr. Santhanaraj were the directors residing at anbuillam Coimbatore while the assistant directors namely Fr. Noelraj, Fr. Santhanaraj and Fr. Justin were the assistant directors residing at Tiruppur.  In the year 2010 it became a separate house with Fr. Bhakiaraj as the director of Nest and Fr. Thainese as the assistant director and both of them residing at Tiruppur.  Fr. Bhakiaraj was the director up to 2015 with Fr. Benny, Fr. John Vellayil and Fr. John Dharman as assistant directors.  In 2015 it was made a canonical house with Fr. Xavier as the Rector, Fr. John Vellayil as the vice rector and Fr. Peter Arokiaraj as the Administrator.  In 2016 Fr. John Vellayil was replaced by Br. George to serve in this non-formal technical institute.  In 2017 Fr. Herwin became the vice rector and administrator.  The new ministry for the migrant youth was started in 2017 and Fr. Arul Kumar has become in charge of this programme.  In 2018 Fr. Arul Kumar started his regular studies in MBA and Fr. Gabriel was appointed as the vice rector and administrator   

Don Bosco NEST focuses on child labourers and school drop outs in Tiruppur District. It runs a Non formal vocational training center with Garments, computer, tailoring, electrical and plumping.  There are 9 child right centers providing free tuition classes in the neighbourhood. The organization is focusing on child rights based activities, rehabilitation work for child labourers and community based activities for prevention of dropouts. Those who complete the training are job placed and followed up through the past pupil meetings.  The cooperators unit was started with 12 aspirants to support our work together with the other Salesian family members like past pupils and Salesian sisters.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

DON BOSCO NEST– aims at creating a child and youth friendly society that protects rights of children and promotes the moral and spiritual development of young people especially of those at risk.

SKILL TRAINING: The community offers skill training for the youngsters in Sewing machines, Garments construction, Diploma in computer application, Electrical and plumping. There are 42 students at present undergoing this training. There are 4 teaching staff and they are dedicated in their work.

NON-FORMAL AND SUPPLEMENTARY EDUCATION – is organized in seven villages in which 300 children get direct benefit. They are provided with recreational facility, library, right to education and free tuition. Ten lay volunteers are appointed to take care of the children and monitor them in their studies. There are also Children parliaments conducted in all these centres.

CONTINUING EDUCATION – is given to the students who desire to reappear for the 10th or the 12th standard Government Examination in which they failed for different reasons.

MIGRANT YOUTH: The community extends its assistance and accompaniment to the migrant youth through migrant desk. Around 10 to 15 youth visit the campus on Sundays to learn electrical trade. Around 300 migrant youth from cotton blossom factory are gathered on the third Sundays in the parish for meeting and animation when they come for mass.

SALESIAN COOPERATORS: The community has a local unit of co-operators. There are 14 Aspirants. They gather for their regular meeting and animations. The Rector of the community animates them on a regular basis.
