The world observes International Day for Street Children on April 12 every year. This day was started to provide a voice for homeless children. So that their rights cannot be ignored. This day provides opportunities for human rights organizations to spread awareness about the plight of street children throughout the world. The aim is also to educate them, finding safe homes, give them medical facilities, and teach them skills for a better livelihood. According to recent statistics, up to 150 million children around the world are homeless. Some children live on the street with their families, while others spend the majority of their time on the street begging for food and money but return home at night. Some children live on the street as orphans with no family or no home to return to. Needless to say, these children are denied many basic human rights.

On behalf of Don Bosco Anbu illam, we organized an Awareness programme at Salem, New Bus Stand and Kitchipalayam on 12th March 2023. Fr. Paulraj the Assistant Director of DBAI, and Representatives from Open Shelter and Child-friendly Salem participated in the programme. Our staff distributed handouts to the passengers, shopkeepers, Bus drivers and timekeepers. Those handouts were on children having the right to live, the right to survival, the right to development, right to protection. Anyone who finds children on the street should call Child Helpline 1098 toll-free number for help needing care and protection.
