Jnanodaya Salesian Institute of Philosophy

The Retreat, Yercaud, Salem, Tamilnadu

The inauguration of the new academic year at the Jnanodaya Salesian Institute of Philosophy, The Retreat, Yercaud, was held on 6 June 2026. This year, the institute is blessed with 38 vibrant students, hailing from 5 Indian Salesian Provinces and the Diocese of Den Bosch, Netherland (INM – 12; INT – 12; ING – 03; INH – 04; INS – 06; DDB – 01). The programme commenced with the solemn invocation of the Holy Spirit through the Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Rev. Fr. Doss Kennedy SDB, Provincial of Tiruchy Province, and concelebrated by Fr. Victor Antoniraj SDB, Vice‑Provincial of INT, Fr. Ricopar Royan SDB, Economer of INT, together with the residential staff of the Institute. In his homily, the Provincial emphasized the primacy of divine wisdom over worldly wisdom, reminding the assembly that true philosophical formation requires the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. He exhorted both staff and students to remain open to the Spirit’s guidance. Following the Eucharist, the college flag was hoisted by the Provincial and honoured by the staff and students.

The inaugural function continued in the SOLA Hall at 9:30 a.m. Fr. Arul Maran, Rector, welcomed the gathering and introduced the new faculty members.            Fr. Abraham Savarimuthu offered a concise presentation of his doctoral thesis, Anatheism of Richard Kearney: A Possible Way of Returning to God after the Death of God, as the inaugural lecture. The Annual Report of 2025–2026, highlighting academic, formative, and educational activities, was presented by     Fr. James Sundar SDB, Principal and Dean, through a video presentation. The second‑year students staged a creative philosophical skit entitled Jnanodaya Philosophical Museum, beautifully weaving together Western and Indian philosophical traditions. In his keynote address, the Provincial introduced the inspiring theme of Cathedral Thinking, urging staff and students to embrace innovative ideas and long‑term vision, even when immediate results are not visible. He then released the Jnanodaya Journal, along with the college handbook and calendar, presenting copies to staff and students. Fr. Felix Joseph, Director of Youth Services and Professor, proposed the vote of thanks, and the programme concluded with the college anthem.

After the inaugural session, the staff met with the Provincial team for the initial visit, sharing details of the Institute’s programmes, timetable, annual budget, staff responsibilities, and future plans for growth and development. The inauguration of the academic year thus proved to be a deeply enriching and fruitful occasion, setting the tone for a year of meaningful intellectual engagement and philosophical pursuit.
