We strive to achieve this through participatory method, communication related initiatives, animation programmes, workshops, seminars, symposia, intensive research, training programmes, networking and campaigning to make a meaningful intervention in Tamil Nadu.

HISTORY

Don Bosco, Manikandam was canonically erected in the year 2000 as Provincial House along with activities of Social Communication, Development Office, and Christian Fund for Children & Aged (CFCA). In the initial years it had the Provincial team and the department Directors of Social Communication and Development Office and Vazikaatti.  Vazhikaatti services that was functioning in Karumandapam was shifted to the newly built wing in the Provincial House in June 2006.

With extensive work carried out the department of Social Communication and the need to move the Provincial House to the city for functional purposes happened simultaneously with the decision of integrated theologate at Chennai. A decision was made to move the Provincial House to Kristodayam where the students of theology stayed during their theological study at St. Paul’s Seminary. The present house at Manikandam was approved to run diploma courses in media studies along with functioning of other departments. Hence a community of departments was born on 24^th May 2009.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

DB MEDIA CENTRE (DBIICE and Production Unit) – Don Bosco Media Centre concentrates on imparting media education to youth and media production.

DBIICE offers long term and short term media courses to various groups. At present there are 22 students doing ‘ten-month media course’ at the centre.  There are 10 staff working both teaching and non-teaching. Various exposures and seminars are organized for the trainees. Music, cultural arts, picnics and sports training are also offered. Short term courses and week-end courses are offered for the youth and students from nearby institutions.

PRODUCTION UNIT – concentrates on making Short films, story making, web design, photo and video albums both for social awareness and commercial purposes.  There are 4 staff working for this sector. The unit makes efforts to bring a positive change and influence on the youth through media.

DB TECH: The community also offers BBO and Re-tale training to youth through DB tech. There are 35 students with 3 staff. Each batch has their training for three months. There are 18 inmates in the hostel. They are given good food and care.
